Going Green for the Holidays

The holiday season is in full swing. Use these tips to enjoy this joyous time while caring for the environment:

  • Take along reusable bags when you go shopping. Single-use bags are a waste of trees (paper) or fossil fuels (plastic). Purchase sturdy, lightweight, reusable cloth or paper bags and carry them with you to the grocery store or when you shop.
  • Give gifts that ensure a more nurturing, earth-friendly holiday. Rather than accumulating more “stuff” to store and throw away, make gifts of experience or service to create a more meaningful holiday for others and perhaps less stress for yourself.
  • Be creative with earth-friendly wrapping paper options — and recycle! Paper comes from forests and is often discarded to landfills after one use. Wrap your gifts in reusable fabric, baskets, bags or newspaper. Buy recycled or recyclable wrapping paper. Better yet, give gifts that don’t need wrapping at all.
  • Decorate with earth-friendly tree options. Buy a live tree and plant it outside after Christmas or buy a reusable artificial tree. If you do get a cut tree, recycle it when the holidays are over.
