Tips for Healthy Hands and Feet

April is National Foot Health month. As winter ends and spring approaches, making trips to the salon or doing at home pedicures are common. Follow these tips to ensure you keep your hands and feet healthy.

  • If you have diabetes or poor circulation in your feet, consult a podiatrist for advice on a safe pedicure.
  • Bring your own utensils. Bacteria and fungus can move easily from one person to the next if the salon doesn’t use proper sterilization techniques.
  • Use a toenail clipper with a straight edge to ensure a straight across cut and less chance of getting ingrown nails. See a podiatrist if you get ingrown toenails often.
  • Apply light pressure with an emery board and file in one direction to smooth nail edges.
  • Clean your nails by running a wooden or rubber manicure stick underneath them.
  • Apply emollient-enriched moisturizer to keep soles soft and moisturized.

  • Use the same tools for both pedicure and manicure services because bacteria and fungus can transfer between fingers and toes.
  • Razor dead skin because it could result in permanent damage if used incorrectly and cause infection if too much skin is removed.
  • Cut cuticles because it increases your chance of getting an infection.
  • Use anything sharp to clean under your nails.
  • Shave your legs before a pedicure because any small shaving cut allows bacteria to enter.
