Exercise Tips for Beginners

Have you decided to start an exercise plan, but you don’t know where to start? Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • Visit a Doctor. Always check with a healthcare professional before starting any exercise program.
  • Start Slow. Start slow and gradually build up. The University of Oregon recommends that the length of time you exercise and the intensity at which you do should increase by only five percent each week.
  • Warm Up. Always warm up before exercising and cool down afterward. Start with some easy stretches, or walk or jog at a slower pace until you have warmed up. When you finish your workout, gradually decrease your walking or running speed to cool down and repeat your stretches.
  • Know the Equipment. Don’t use exercise equipment until you are familiar with how it works. You could seriously injure yourself by falling off moving equipment or getting caught in moving parts.
  • Respect Your Limits. Don’t push yourself too far beyond your comfort zone. Over- exercising can be just as bad as no exercise at all.
  • Know when to stop. Pain, dizziness and other unusual physical symptoms are signs that you may be doing too much. Pay attention to the signals your body is sending you.
  • Look for warning signs. If you experience shortness of breath, tightness or pain in the chest or left arm and the symptoms do not diminish after you have stopped exercising, seek medical help immediately.
