According to a recent survey, 83 percent of Americans regularly eat at their desks, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. To keep your brown bagging safe and help prevent foodborne illness at the office, follow these simple food safety tips:

  • Wash your hands before and after digging into your desktop dish.
  • If you bring in a lunch with perishable food, don’t let more than two hours pass before you put it in the refrigerator.
  • Don’t let lunchtime leftovers remain unrefrigerated for more than two hours.
  • Use an insulated lunch bag with freezer pack if a refrigerator is not available.
  • Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator or microwave, not on the countertop.
  • If you bring leftovers for lunch, re-heat them to the proper temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Keep your desk stocked with disinfectant wipes or paper towels and spray cleanser
