Help Prevent Choking in Adults

Choking and suffocation is the third leading cause of home and community death in the United States. Although not chewing food properly is the most common cause of choking, eating too fast, drinking alcohol and certain health conditions can increase the chances of someone choking.

A few simple behaviors can help keep you and your loved ones from choking:

  • Chew foods slowly, especially if you wear dentures
  • Refrain from laughing or talking while eating
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol before and during meals
  • Take care with foods such as peanut butter, meat, soft foods like cookies or cakes and large chunks of fruits
