The unusually warm weather over much of the nation has resulted in an earlier start to tornado season this year. It is important to be safe and try to plan ahead for this kind of severe weather.

Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Know your community’s warning system. Typically, sirens are used for outdoor warnings.
  • Watch for the following danger signs:
    • Dark, often greenish sky
    • Large hail
    • Dark, large, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)
    • Roaring noise, similar to freight train
  • Go to the basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
  • If you are caught outdoors with no shelter, find a ditch or depression, lie there and cover your head with your hands.
  • Listen to local news or a weather radio to stay informed about watches and warnings.

Prepare ahead of time by:

  • Removing diseased and damaged limbs from trees.
  • Consider having your safe room reinforced for better protection, for more information visit the FEMA website.
